This tutorial will show you how to use the "Explain with Copilot" feature in Notepad in Windows 11.

Notepad is a fast and simple text editor that can be used to view, edit, and search through plain text documents instantly.

Starting with the Notepad version 11.2401.25.0 in the Canary and Dev Channels on Windows 11, Microsoft is adding a new feature that helps you quickly understand content in your text files. With “Explain with Copilot”, you can ask Copilot in Windows to help explain log files, code segments, or any selected content directly from within Notepad.

Reference:

This feature is available on devices that have Copilot in Windows, but there is a known issue where some users might not see this new feature in Notepad right away.

Here's How:

1 Open Notepad, or open a text file in Notepad.

2 Highlight any text you want to use "Explain with Copilot" with. (see screenshot below step 3)

3 Perform one of the following actions:
  • Press the Ctrl + E keys.
  • Right click on the highlighted text, and click/tap on Explain with Copilot.

4 When Copilot opens, click/tap on Send to confirm. (see screenshot below)

5 A detailed explanation of the highlighted text will now appear in Copilot.

That's it,
Shawn Brink
