WD_BLACK 4TB SN850X NVMe Read/Write Speeds?

WD_BLACK 1TB SN850X NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Solid State Gen4 PCIe, M.2 2280, Up to 7,300 MB/s - WDS100T2XHE

Just wondering if this is below manufacturer average to get under the 7000 for my read speeds.. so far I am happy with the drive and the 4TB's I do see some perforamce gains compare to my factory drive loading times opening ms office/regular browser and loading times in games.

Have you selected "NVME SSD" in CrystalDiskMark's Settings? It matters.

You could also try the Peak Performance profile, if you want the highest numbers. I haven't been able to run any profiles other than the Default one, though. It doesn't run through the tests properly.

Thanks @bobkn Yeap NVME SSD was selected below is results with peak performance, same results since this is a laptop im thinking maybe due to heat i wont get consistent 7000 speeds

i mean you are pretty much there. That's 95% of rated "up to" speed. As long as you weren't getting like 2400MB/sec I think you are fine.

The specs for your laptop say PCIe 3.0, which is probably what is causing the speed difference.
The SN850X is a PCIe 4.0 SSD.
Considering that you're running a PCIe 4.0 drive on a 3.0 motherboard, I'd say you're getting great speeds.

How is he getting 6900 seq read over pcie 3.0 ? 4 x pcie 3.0 theoretical max is 4gb .

pcie 3.0 x1 ~1gb theoretical in practice more like 880-890mb if you are lucky.

pcie 4.0 x1 ~2gb theoretical

rnd4k doesnt look any better than gen3 nvme disks. Is it just that particular nvme or do all gen4 perform similarly on the bottom row ?

I think that data rate would be impossible for a PCI-E 3.0 X4 drive.

The Ryzen 7 6800H provides PCI-E 4.0 lanes. That doesn't prove that the laptop has a PCI-E 4.0 M.2 slot available, but it's suggestive.

Maybe the factory M.2 drives were PCI-E 3.0 to save a few pennies. (Wouldn't save much at the moment, at least at retail.)

which cannot be the case because the seq read speed he posted is 6900. Cant get that using pcie 3.0 x4

The 6800H has 20 PCIe lanes with 16 usable.
But I can't find the PCIe lanes that the motherboard or chipset supports.

For example... this is my now old motherboard and CPU... (X570 chipset)

Maybe they are trying to keep the heat down. If the user replaces it with a disk that kicks out a lot more heat then that is the users problem.

yes x4 is the maximum for any nvme disks I have ever heard of.

Not everybody knows they will work with less than 4. I have an x1 pcie to nvme adapter, works fine.

I just checked the ASUS motherboard manuals for the most expensive, newest motherboards.
They all seem to top out at PCIe X.0 x4

Also, the OP's laptop does support PCIe 4.0, it just came with a PCIe 3.0 drive (factory).

If you refer to their desktop motherboards, some of the ones that take Gen12 and Gen13 CPUs (I can never recall their "lake" series) have a single PCI-E 5.0 X4 M.2 slot (which gets its lanes from the CPU). If that slot is populated (regardless of the PCI-E generation of the M.2 drive), the X16 graphics slot falls back to X8.

My Z690-E board is an example (with an I9-13900K CPU).

If any of my PCs could generate speeds like that I don't know if I'd be bragging or complaining. lol There's a reason why the manufacturer's use terminology like "up to" and that's always assuming you're running under optimum conditions. :::sigh::: I feel old. I can't relate to these numbers.
