Win11: a potpourri of immediate problems

So I'm on Win11. This is going to be about general purpose Win11 oddities I run up against. (btw. I'm hoping this might be a place others new to Win11 might come...)

1: Sound. (Realtek internal speakers on this laptop) I have a half a dozen sound-related windows up...can hear sounds when I do something incorrectly like click on a window behind the active window. Also managed to bring something up which showed both speakers on the laptop worked.
YouTubes employing sound do not sound off.

2: What does "Mobility Center" mean? Is Mobility Center, for example, inappropriate to Win10?

3. When you sort a directory by Name, Win11 by default super-sorts the directory by Time-related categories (e.g. Today, Yesterday, Last week, Last month, ... BC...)
What's the fix to prevent all that time-related stuff from coming up at all...ever!?

4. Right-mouse clicking on a file/folder item, rather than providing one with a list of all available options, relative to that file, that are currently available (a list who's length is partially dependent on what apps a user might have downloaded that can specifically be applied to files or folders--always ended with the very useful "Properties" item) instead displays a severely protracted list with as the last item "Show more options".
4a) What's the permanent fix that instead displays, by default, the complete list o items (ending with Properties).
4b) Is there a way to remove selected items to that list of Right-click categories?
4c) and/or to install a new sub-menu,

If you are using another browser other than Edge, see if watching a youtube video using Edge gives you sound. If you hear sound, go to step 2.
If you do not hear sound start at step 1.

1. If no sound in Edge, test your sound to make sure speakers are receiving sound.
Settings>system>sound
Under "Choose where to play sound' make sure speakers are selected. Check that volume level is turned up and that sound is not muted (an X over the little speaker icon beside volume.)
Click arrow to the right of speakers.
You should be on Settings>system>sound>properties page. Click the TEST button.
If you are not hearing sound through your speakers, it would point back to a either a driver problem or a speaker problem.

If you hear sound through the test of your speakers, it points back to a windows setting.

2. If you are using a third party browser to access youtube, right click on sound icon in task tray. Select volume mixer. In the 'apps' section whatever browser you are using (except for Edge) should be listed.
To the right of the name of the browser is a little sound icon. If there is an X across it, it means the sound is muted for that app. Click the icon to remove the X. Click the down arrow to the far right . Make sure input and output is set to default.

Also when viewing a youtube video, make sure the sound is not muted in the panel of the video.

As shown in the picture below, this laptop can adjust the brightness, volume, battery, wireless, external displays, and sync options. Depending on your hardware and your computer manufacturer, more or fewer tiles may be shown.

Shift (+Right-click).

Browser MS Edge
System>Sound>All sound devices>Properties no sound
System>Sound

Speakers: Still nothing.


System > Sound: I see the 'x' by the Volume, but I can't reset it.

Expanding Right Click entries (3 options!)
Simple Right click select (Without the Shift - Right Click)... but then how does the user know there are other options available?

Right click with shift key...

Simple (left click) select. Oh wait!! Its there! Provided you were just looking at it in Shift Select mode.

I came up with this split-screen view (3 sections)
Thinking I want to reduce the display to the original two (or less?) panels I right click on the rightmost panel and up pops [Remove Properties]

Clicking on the button I find it allows you to only remove one property (no Shift/Select or Control/Select)

But you can [Select All]...or can you? It only selects the Date Taken item.
And if one wonders what (single entry only) can contain Personal Information? Click on the link and you're taken to a 'general purpose' (So what question do you have...) microsoft site.



p.s. I'm not happy with the quality of my input into this thread. I thought that the problems I'd encounter would be relatively (simple and) straightforward.
But they're not and I'm finding that getting straight what I want to say is overwhelming on a single-screen laptop (one taking up the dining room table, no less!). So until I can add two more screens to this laptop I'm sorry I'll have to stop posting to this particular thread.

Maybe, however, this indicates the rabbit-hole into which the Win11 interface has ventured. ("one pill makes it larger/smaller...")

You may have to click "Allow" to enable the sound device.

Yep, Windows 11 is different..., some would say adapt, others might suggest 3rd party utilities...,

For me, the limited Taskbar and Right Click Context Menu is a thorn in my side!
I want all options visible with one right click!!!

Nice to see another SnagIt user.
However, what is it about SnagIt that would rate the program an: "Open with SnagIt" moniker? Would one choose SnagIt to open non-SnagIt captures to annotate them?

I've had SnagIt since 9.0 days and haven't upgraded...

Within a folder, select sort. In the pane that pops up in the upper half of the pane select what principal you want to sort by. In the lower half of that pane select ascending. In same pane select group by, select NONE

That will only turn off grouping for one name space. There are three different name spaces for Downloads (i.e. three different ways you can get to that folder) so there are three separate saved views.

You must also go to Options and click the "Apply to Folders" button after selecting Group by None to turn grouping off for all (well almost all) views of Downloads.

That procedure will not reset file dialog views that have already been opened with a group by date view. For such dialogs, right click in the white space to select Group by None.

Alternatively, to turn off the grouping nonsense globally (and set all your other preferred folder view defaults), you can use my WinSetView app.

How does one create a "My Computers" suffix to one's posts (like the one glasskuter uses)? Is this some sort of postscript that one can program to appear at the end of one's posts?

Simple, you just fill in details of a second PC as your System Two in your profile's specs.


Yours currently says 'My Computer' (without the 's') as you've only filled in System One.
