Windows 11
Hello,
Known bug, but I've never had it before.
Windows 11 22H2 22621.2215

The installation was not successful, an error occurred during the BOOT process in the SAFE_OS phase.

Background:

System was dual boot with Win10, the recovery partition didn't work in Win11 from within Win11, so I wanted to iron an InPlaceUpgrade over it so that the recovery in Win11 works again, since it is restored,
After 4 attempts I give up. After BOOT only the Windows 11 LOGO appears, then switch off the laptop, restart and the old system is recovered. Now it's something for the professionals.
DISM; SFC; everything OK, then cleaned the component store, no improvement, then deleted Win10 and the recovery, no improvement.

Here is the original thread in German,

earlier, it was working.

perhaps you have an Idea

@catweazel

alles in ordnung !!!

When installing Windows -- even though you don't need it afterwards if your system is small -- check the following

1) you have a spare 40GB of disk space -- It's bonkers but true
2) Does your system conform to W11 requirements e.g secure boot , TPM, required CPU etc
3) gpt disk with EFI partition

If there's no problem with that

Then if you dont mind a clean install -- save W10 image first if you still want it - can be restored later.

now boot the windows install media -- if you haven't got one get the build you want from UUPDUMP and run the cmd to create an iso image - create bootable usb stick via rufus etc and boot it

From the bootable media choose --repair computer --> command mode

then as follows :

diskpart
select disk xx <disk where you want to install Windows>
clean
convert gpt
create partition efi size=100
format fs=fat32 quick
list vol
select vol xx <the 100 MB efi partition>
assign letter=S
create partition primary
format ntfs quick
list vol
select vol xx <where xx is the vol of the ntfs partition created)
assign letter=W <or anything you want>
exit

now change the running directory to the install media's sources

cd d:\sources <assume the media is on drive D>
d:\ dism /Apply-Image /Imagefile:install:wim /Index:1 /ApplyDir:W:\ where w is the target windows system disk

this will install even if your hardware is not sufficient in the Normal specs".
Note if your install disk has several versions of windows on it you'll have to select the correct index nr --that's why I prefer using UUPDUMP to just select the edition I want so the index is always 1.

after that's finished you need to install the bootloader. easy enough

bcdboot w:\windows /s S: /f UEFI <S is the small efi partition and w is the target windows disk>

exit
the system should then boot into the initial OOBE stuff and you can continue as normal.

If you want to bypass the Ms account logon simply at the sign in use the following

account nobody@nobody.com
password anything you like

You'll get a message OOPS something went wrong -- just hit the NEXT button and it will continue with a local account.

After you've done this and you want to restore W10 as a dual boot system post back because there's a couple of things you need to do. Sort out the Win 11 first.

Cheers
jimbo

@jimbo45

spichst du deutsch, das wäre fein, aus Island ?:-)
ich werde es testen, hier ist es momentan eine affenhitze

Do you speak German, that would be nice, from Iceland ?

I'll test it, it's really hot here at the moment.

EDIT:
Thanks for the good instructions, but I'm keeping the dual system, it's just that the recovery partition from Win11 doesn't working out of Win11,
does not start from Win11, system - restore,
recovery.png

everything else is perfect, otherwise I have 3 laptops, all Win11 incompatible, and of course I used the TPM trick from the German forum . All 3 laptops have dual systems.
Best regards

another way :
hier ist es im Moment richtig heiß.
In Icelandic - but doesn't get ever really hot though :
það er mjög heitt hérna í augnablikinu.

Also can do Flemish / Dutch, French (had several gigs at the EU comission in Brussels -- Iceland is full EEA member, schengen member, NATO member and Customs Union + Single market so no probs with working in or even for the EU. The main problem with Iceland joining the EU is that the Euro isn't wanted otherwise there's no specific problem here unlike "Der Insel" with all their Brexit woes. Know a bit of Spanish too. Portuguese though I'm not even bothering to try. !!!! Our Schools work believe it or not !!. Even primary school kids of around 6 can speak decent English too.

I was also working in Hamburg around th time of the fall of the Berlin Wall -- still remember those trabis with the terrible smoke nearly getting smashed on the A7 Autobahn as they had no idea of big mercedez cars doing 210 kph. Altona Sun Morning fish market also great plus the harbour celebration days with old the old boats coming out on the Elbe.

Screenshot_20230909_141637.png

Those were the days -- don't suppose we'll see the like of the heady excitement of that period again and hopes for the future. Glad to have been young then.

Anyway have a good afternoon.

BTW if you use vhdx files no prob with dual boot W10 create a vhdx file for the W10 system attach it, clone existing W10 to partition and re run the boot installer. (bcdboot.exe)

Great way of having loads of bootable windows systems without any problem. You'll get the Windows boot menu instead of having to use the computers firmware BIOS to select boot.

Note though when booting a vhdx system windows you'll get prompted for the boot option again - just leave it and it will boot the seected windows system you originally wanted. It only does this because the Windows system has to load the appropriate boot for the vhdx system. You only need one EFI partition regardless of the actual physical number of disks you use. == all the others should be just be vhdx files on your main (or alternate) disks. When you attach the vdisk just create basic mbr disk, format to ntfs and clone / install windows system. Then rupdate boot manager.

I don't understand the point.
The point of gathering the log files is that error is normally caused by an incompatible driver. These logfiles can be analyzed to try to find which one.

SetupDiag is a free diagnostic tool by Microsoft that is designed to find and parse Windows 10 setup log files to determine why an upgrade or update failed to install on a computer system.

SetupDiag works only on devices running Windows 10. The second requirement is that it depends on the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6 which needs to be installed on the device it is run on.

If you run SetupDiag without parameters, it attempts to locate log files that Windows 10 creates during the upgrade process in the default folders on the device.

The program creates a results.log file in its directory when it completes the scan which includes upgrade issues that it detected in the log files during parsing.

SetupDiag creates a zip archive of all log files that it processed on top of that which it saves as Logs.zip in the same directory as well.

The files are too large to upload here. You have to upload the zipped file to any cloud provider, (dropbox, Google Drive, onedrive, etc) Then provide a shared link to the file here.

I just noticed that the laptop is circa 2015 and has an unsupported processor so the error is probably related to that if you did not modify the iso you downloaded..

A repair install is the same thing as an upgrade. Just as with a clean install, with an upgrade you have to bypass the compatibility checks and do it with internet OFF.
To perform an upgrade, you’ll need to modify the appraiserress.dll file and then run the setup.
Here's the tutorial for compatible hardware. Read @Bree response #150 for how to make it work in a non-compatible machine.

Since you're going to the trouble, 23h2 will be released in less than a month. You may want to wait so you don't have to do it all over again as you WILL NOT be offered the 23h2 upgrade through Windows Update.

see Windows 11 could not be installed, 0xC1900101-0x20017
i have the TPM Trick used. The P50 is from 2017, this says Lenovo Vantage.
I think if necessary you can wait for the function update, so far I've never had any update problems with the system.

@FreeBooter

Unfortunately everything has already been deleted. I'll repeat the inplace upgrade later and then upload them, if they are there, in which folder exactly ?

Now i´m going to the german TV :-)

We need results.log and SetupDiagResults.log files in its directory.
Good morning,
here "C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther" no results.log and SteupDiagResults.log.
see

Please post V2 results before the next in place upgrade.
What do you mean exactly, that makes it even more difficult for me here,

I think the Problem for Windows Setup, to create the Recovery Partition, but it is possible, to create manually, but i don`t know enough the commands.

here
C:\Windows\Logs\SetupDiag\setupdiagresults.xml, but not meaningful.

here
you can see the Part. E, there is a WimRe, very small, and Reagentc.xml, after Reboot, the Partition is deleteted.
