Your data is at risk pop up

Recently I've been getting one of those little popups that appears bottom right of screen - saying "your data is at risk". It doesn;t quite look like a microsoft pop up. I thought I had things like that turned off as well. Any idea what it is or how to get rid of it? Malwarebytes didn't find anything. This is on Windows 10 by the way. I just click the cross to get rid of it usually.

Can you post a screenshot of the popup. Someone may recognize it.

It's probably some kind of adware, but without seeing it, it's hard to be sure.

Will do next time it pops up. It's a small square grey box with black borders and red lettering.

If I saw something like that and I didn't KNOW what it was... I'd just restore from a backup.

If you want to... you can run ESET's One-time scan from here... it's a good 2nd opinion.

I've just turned off "Show notifications from apps and other senders and maybe it'll stop now. I had another similar one about McAffee a while back - and there is no McAffee on the computer. It was a clean install.

Norton and Malwarebytes didn't find anything so I think it's some kind of push notification ad. Checked browser and push notifications are blocked so it's not that.

Sometimes, when you install 3rd party software, it'll sneak in an ad for something.
Generally, if the software installer allows me to choose: Custom, I always do, cause that's where they hide weird things a lot of the time.


Also... check your browser(s) add ons. A lot of time 3rd party software will install browser add ons too.
Most decent 3rd party software will give you a way to opt out of these little surprises.
You just have to be on the look out for things like that during install.

Do you have BIOS S.M.A.R.T warnings enabled?
If the pop up is not some browser push from anti virus company trying to sell something it could actually be a warning of disk corruption or other error through the BIOS function.

Next time hit the Print screen button and capture it. Make note of what web page you are on at the time

In Firefox settings - Privacy and security scroll down to Permissions then select notifications settings and check what's there. You can block individual sites or remove.

Thanks all. Yes everything was blocked on Firefox - I checked. Am very careful with downloads and checking for no add on stuff. Haven't actually downloaded that much. Especially recently. Will check Bios smart warnings but bios are minimalist so haven't seen that there before. Have Samsung magician installed and it shows no issues. SSD is quite recent. Actually - off to check Samsung magician in case the ads are coming from there! Yes will screenshot if it reappears. However, I have now turned "off" "Get notifications from apps and other senders" in settings. Which might have done the trick - we'll see. Samsung magician does have ads within the program.

I do have Ease US back up programme installed (fairly recently) could be pop ups from that although it doesn't mention the name. The free version is known for pop up ads apparently but this is a lifetime licence.

Some backup programs will give that warning if it's been awhile since you last used the program to make an image.

Ok it just popped up again. Thought I'd managed to stop that. Ignore the google search - just included the whole page to give a perspective of the size of the pop up. Now I've had chance to have a good look at it, the symbol top left is the one for the Ease US todo backup program I installed not that long ago. So seems it's a push notification from that program. Can't see anything in settings to turn it off! They really should make their popups look more user friendly as it does look dodgy!

Definitely looks to be the EaseUS Todo Backup Home pop up to me Hazel, and I did have them popping up after I installed the product from the giveaway through here.
Just can't remember how I got them to stop - Sorry.

Thanks. Yes I installed it from the freebee here as well :) . Ok so I noticed in services it's running all the time in the background so stopped it running. I can just update it manually when I want to make a back up. I guess it's not a bad thing to remind you to back up but it's a bit too often and distracting when in the middle of doing something. And it might help if they didn't make it look like a virus!

I think perhaps it's the other way round - viruses are trying to look like it.
At least you now know that it is not malignant - just annoying......

I've seen a few similar threads. Might want to stay away from those free giveaways.

Glad you got to the bottom of it, however it is not just 3rd party apps guilty of pop ups disregarding your preferences or hiding the off button, I have every part of Windows game bar disabled and all related notifications turned off, yet if I play any game, when I quit out I will get a pop up reminding me to 'claim my points earned', every half hour until I restart the PC.
I know it is the XBox app integration doing it and it seems impossible to turn off that one notification, very irritating!

Yes I cannot see a way to turn this pop up off either. What I have done is stop the service running automatically. There is no need for it to do that unless I want to make a back up. Hopefully that will stop it. I remember having a similar issue with Malwarebytes. While you could turn notifications off in Malwarebytes, it would run in the background all the time and it's not necessary when you only need it for an on demand scan.

In a way though, however annoying the pop up is (comes up when I'm in the middle of doing something), maybe it's not such a bad thing to be reminded to do a back up regularly.

Its likely the only place you will be able to stop the pop-up is from the EaseUS dashboard settings

note its likely there is a scheduled task, if you do not have the option in the dashboard, dissable it
