Has anyone had issues installing the 2024-02 cumulative update?

A lot of people I know and at work I am seeing issues with this update installing. I have tried pausing updates and then resuming for it to pull down fresh, tried the windows update reset tutorial, tried the dism and the sfc scan all to no avail. Other updates work fine such as office and other important updates. These just never install. I am also puzzled because I keep seeing this on multiple machines, not just my own....

These updates all installed fine:

They installed fine on my machines, 2 Pro [Notebook and Desktop] and 3 Home [1 Desktop and 2 Notebooks] on 2/29/2024 plus on 2 Unsupported Notebooks from 2014. The Home Desktop and 1 Home Notebook were give me for parts but I fixed them.

The 4848 is a Preview update and doesn't have to be installed.
It will be part of the Cumulative Update next month. Just ignore it
and wait for it to install next time. The 4765 is the CU for February
and that one should be installed. It will bring your OS version to
22631.3155. this is a security update. you can download it manually
from the MS Catalogue here: Choose 23H2 X64

I just tried to do it from the microsoft catalog. Both failed.

Not sure why I have the preview being offered either or on other systems I have seen. I updated the screenshot in the original post.

Try resetting the Windows Update Components...

My two computers installed with no problems.

I did try this on my machine and some others to no avail. Also tried renaming the software distribution folder as well. I have tried everything except a repair install. So frustrating especially because it's not just my machine. I have been getting tons of people noticing this in my local tech circles. 2 friends have this issue and my work is noticing this as well. I even tried closing all software except windows stuff and still no dice. So odd.

Glad some of you got it installed, now just to figure out why

Well, as you mentioned, it might be time to try an In-Place Upgrade (repair install).

An In-Place Upgrade "compares" what is installed on the computer, with the Windows ISO image.
Then, it overwrites any corrupted Windows files, with clean copies from the ISO image.
This is how it "repairs" Windows while allowing you to keep your programs and personal files.

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

DISABLE non-Microsoft:
a) antivirus software
b) firewall software
c) drive encryption software


Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper Standard
Making a backup is optional, but always a smart move.
Macrium Reflect
AOMEI Backupper Standard (free)


Get the Windows 11 ISO (Option #2), and save it to your desktop...


Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations.
Your drivers, programs and data will be intact.

Yeah, still doesn't make sense why it isn't just me.....so strange.

I love how microsoft retires the windows update troubleshooter when there are still issues.....

I'll try the repair install......lots of machines to do that on.

Just try one at first.
IF... it solves the problem, then you can do the others.

True. I'm just sad ha. Been a long time since I had windows update issues. Think the last recent time I had trouble was windows 7 and it was an easy fix

Lately... MS Updates have been a bit sketchy.
KB5034441 on Win 10 didn't work for anyone.
The size of the Recovery partition had to be increased for the update to work. That's just sloppy coding. :/

That's somewhat similar to the Notebooks a few years ago with 32GB drives that couldn't continue to be upgraded due to lack of space and the drives couldn't be changed. Who was to blame, the OS programmers or the OEMs that didn't see ahead to needing more space? It's the same old game, buy a 1/2 Ton pickup truck when should have paid more for the 3/4 Ton pickup truck because the 1/2 Ton was cheaper.

IF that's the only KB not installing, why not wait till it's released to the masses?
This is a release preview which should (in my opinion) only be released to the Insider channel.
There is quite a bit of chatter on the net about this one doing strange things to PCs around the
world. It does bring a few updates like Moment 5 and the USB4 support but, if this is not completely
baked, why risk it.

for me and multiple others I know, its the preview (which I dont even understand why I am being offered) and the reguler that is failing. Nothing 2024-02 related will install.

That would be strange because this one is fairly stable and should install quickly.
OK, I hadn't googled that one because no one has complained about it Yet!
But, it seems that MS has confirmed that it is a piece of...


If can, I would simply hide this update until a working version comes out of MS factory.

correct, I updated my original post with better screenshots. And thanks ill take a look, though I have just been ignoring it for now. Will do a repair install but I was thinking about just waiting until the next cumulative and seeing how that goes.

I checked a few machines and none have that hidden folder C:\$WinREAgent

I think that it's because none of them were able to install it yet.
try running the tool to see if it pops up and check mark Hide and next.

Is your PC experiencing odd behaviors at this time?
If not, why not hold off on a repair.
