You might try Default Programs Editor. It's a standalone (no installation required) and I've had good results with it. The top category here offers you the chance to enter the extension of a file type and change the icon associated with that type.

I just used the program to change my own .zip file icon to a pencil icon, and it worked flawlessly. Try it; you'll love it.

Then I used the same program to change it back to default. Had to find the default icon in System32\imageres.dll.

The thing is... I already did it in IconPackager:

1713022670710.png

And I see Default Programs Editor displays it correctly:
1713022755561.png

As does Windows Explorer itself:
1713022785965.png

BUT both Total Commander 32 and 64 keep displaying the ugly yellow ones:
1713022826980.png

And CustomizerGod also detects the yellow ones, even if it fails to change them:
1713022892520.png

So where the hell are those from and how to change them? 🤔

These other programs you are using seem to be ignoring the settings of icon packager and calling the icons from their default location which may well now be the
Code:
C:\Windows\SystemResources\imageres.dll.mun
file, or some other mun file. Editing those is no easy feat.

Where they're stored is in the file @antspants cited above. Why your two programs are using the default ones instead of the ones you want is a question I could only work with if I installed and tried to configure your two problem programs. Maybe since you've got the desired icons in File Explorer, and the only place you see the defaults still is in the two programs, you could settle for that, and not look in those programs for those icons. Maybe. 🤷‍♂️:giggle:

Id suggest it was a question for Stardock forums maybe?

Search in here for imageres.dll.mun files and you’ll probably learn a little more about them.

Hey.

1) Here is the location at the registry to check and define the icon of .zip.

1713107742782.png

2) Unfortunately some third-party programs do not follow all registry and explorer settings. The correction can be done by them.
All we have the same issue per program.

3) Check the icons that i use for zips. Perhaps you would like it.

4) I use by by side if it required Filetypes , Default Program Editor (bug:any time i restore from backup , task bar stop works. It solved with sign-out or restart) , filetypesman , and registry. File types and icons are a problematic element of windows as its multifactorial: third party apps , registry , windows file types settings. Eg. when we install 7-zip it changes the zip icons. Also Microsoft puts system icons at files that we cant change e.g imageres.dll (if you find a solution to this please tell me. Still i search for a way that works 100% to change the default folder icon.)
To solve this, I use three solutions in this order:
-back & restore with default programs editor (warning: as its buggy ensure that you have image backup and restore point created before you do Restore. One time with win 10 it crashes (BSOD) all the system and did clean install to fix it.Right now it crashes the taskbar after each restore. That could be fixed with sign-out or restart.)
-Restore from restore point
-Restore from image backup.
As the last 2 arent so easy , DPE is the current best solution.

5) Try Q-dir. It shows me all the icons correct.

That's what I tried to say in posts 2, 3, and 4.

@Milincho: I think maybe since you've got DPE and you saw that it recognized the change you made with IconPackager, it would be worth the short time required to open DPE, change the .zip folder icon to something elses, and then close and re-open the program and change it back to the blue one you like. Maybe it will work. Maybe those two programs of yours will catch on. Maybe ...

Hey.
Please could you try a restore via DPE to see if you have the same with or other problem ?
Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by "restore via DPE," but since I began changing system-assigned icons with DPE, I've had to restore (for other reasons) with Macrium Reflect several times, and nothing has broken at all in my taskbar, File Explorer, or the notification tray. Nothing.

I changed the icons of .txt files (which I've set to open with my preferred text editor, but I don't like my text editor's icon) and .docx files (which are default set to open with LibreOffice Writer, but I don't like the icon), and even after an in-place upgrade, those icons remained changed. (I've also changed the icons of a bunch of programs' executable files with Resource Hacker, and that hasn't failed either.)

Both System Restore and Macrium are restoration specialists. DPE isn't one. JMHO.

It restores only the changes that you have do with the DPE or perhaps and the whole file types keys.
It dont restore the whole resistry and it takes about 4 sec. to do that.

I believe you. But I still wouldn't trust it with my registry. If something in my registry needs repairing, I have specialist programs available to do the repairing. I do trust them.
