Solved How to Set a Default Network Adapter

I have two Ethernet Network adapters. One is by Intel and the other is a Realtek PCIe 2.5GbE Family Controller which is supposed to be my default it was in Windows 10. Both are connected to my Linksys Wireless Router. My PC does not have a strictly wireless connection. If I disable the Intel Adapter, I start having connection problems. I ordered a Linksys WGA54G Wireless - G Game Adapter IEEE 802.11 with an Ethernet port but it may not arrive till September. In the meantime I would like to know if a default can be set somehow?

You should be able to change your network adapter connection priorities like below also in Windows 11. The highest priority will be default.

I'm late to the party, but I have a question: why are both network adapters connected to your router?

I don't have a system with two adapters at the moment. In the past, I did. I was content to choose one, and not use the other.

It came like that and if I do not use them both I will lose Network connectivity. I did try to change the order but when I did it started to drop the network. The Intel Ethernet is supposed to be for Wi-Fi but I did not order it and when I installed The OS in Windows 10 it did not matter, but in 11 it wanted to use it?? I bought a WI-FI adpter that will fit in it and I will remove the software from the port and install that port. I should have removed the driver to it before going to Win 11.

I don't understand.

The Intel and Realtek Ethernet adapters serve the same purpose. The Intel one is rated at 1Gbps, the Realtek one, 2.5 Gbps. That'd be the major choice between them. What do you have them connected to? It would make no sense to have them cabled to the same router, whether the router is wireless or not.

I want 2 Ethernet Adapters. I think MBs with 2 on-board adapters are awesome. What can you do with 2 adapters?

Sarcasm will get you nowhere.

I've never done it, but I believe that under some circumstances, two Ethernet adapters can be combined for increased bandwidth. Since one of the adapters here is rated at 2.5Gbps, that would seem sort of pointless.

I got rid of The Intel Adapter it was being used but I found that in my BIOS I did not have both IVP4 and IPV6 Enabled. I removed the sofware from the Intel Adapter and now I am using only one network adapter like most users. Thanks @bobkn

There is a way to team NICs in Windows 10 (and thus also in 11, presumably) as I just learned to my surprise. See this interesting article: How to enable NIC Teaming in windows 10 Using PowerShell - MCSAGURU. I just ran the setup cmdlet (New-netswitchteam) in an admin PS session, and it still runs without complaining. I can't tell if it works or not, without doing some switch work (swapping cables around). If somebody cares, respond here and I'll check it out...

If I use both I do not have a problem other than a slower PC.

If this is the only device on your network then Public can have a slight safety advantage as all the ports would be defaulted closed. if you wish to use an additional desktop / laptop or printer etc connected then the private network is best as it will allow the File / Printer sharing options on the devices to be switched on (you can switch this off to "hide" specific devices from the network if you wish )

As for why would you have multiple ethernet ports on a device these can be of two different capacities (as with yours), which would normally have either connected, or both enabled for connection to two networks. this could be a direct High speed link to the internet backbone, and the other to the local gigabit network This is normally seen in servers

I have used multiple cards. some with multiple ports in much larger network systems where multiple networks needed to connect to a file or other resource server the singe data server was connected to the server, a router or switch to the various ports
