I am highly pi$$ed off so this is a vent more than a question. You folks happen to be the only ones I can vent to.
Three times in the last two weeks I have assisted people who have purchased new computers. The reason I am so angry is, it was under my suggestion that these folks bought new systems in the first place so naturally I feel responsible for the mess they got into.
Now, when one uses a MS account, (which MS pushes on the users when they create their accounts), the creation of the account automatically make the user folders location default to Onedrive rather than the C:\users folder. There is no notice to the user that it is being done. In two of these cases when they moved their files from their old computers into the new one, they had more data than the 5gb of free Onedrive storage. In all 3 cases, the purchaser did NOT want to use Onedrive at all.
Naturally, this has put these people in a tailspin of not knowing what to do to resolve this issue. Yes, I know how to straighten this mess out, but the normal person does not. Many of them are not proficient enough to resolve it. It is atrocious for MS to force Onedrive on unsuspecting new buyers and we all know how difficult it is to use a local account during setup. The same situation goes for Office 365 buyers. Most have no idea the files they create in 365 are not stored on their computers by default.
There are so many reasons this new way of creating accounts creates a terrible situation. As Windows 11 evolves, more and more control of our data is taken away from the user and people do not even know it.
Can someone give me a valid reason why MS has made such a terrible decision?
