Solved Need Help With Hyper V & External Drives

Hi There

I am running Windows 11 in a VM. All is working fine expect that I cannot see how to show my external hard drives in File Explorer.

When I first ran the VM I clicked on something (!) and they appeared. That VM was accidently deleted and now I cannot recall how I got the VM to see the drives!! Any help would be gratefully received.

In the VM, when it is running, try disabling the View --> Enhanced Session (or something like that - sorry, I have to rebuild my VMs, let me see if I can get one up really quickly done) to get that dialog to show again so you can add local drives.

If you are using Windows Hyper-V you have to connect to the VM using an Enhanced Session, select the options tab when connecting, and there you can specify which physical drives connected to the host computer get shared with the VM.

There is actually another way to do it, but you have to set your drives offline on the host machine and then attach them to a virtual drive controller in the settings for the VM, but that is more complicated and permanent.

right - but if you already set the 'screen size' dialog (which is also used for peripheral access) then it does not show again, unless you uncheck enhanced session, at which point it shows again and you can set both size and peripheral access.

First, you must use so called Enhanced Session Mode in Hyper-V. See the tutorial on our sister site Ten Forums:

"Mini tutorial": When switching to Enhanced Mode, select Show Options in prompt:

Select Local Resources tab, click More:
