After running disk maintenance, a file marked as 455 bytes remains on the system drive, which is marked as Temporary Internet Files.
I know it sounds ridiculous, but it bothers me that disk maintenance doesn't do a full cleanup.
Therefore, I want to know where the marked Temporary Internet Files are located on the system drive, because I want to remove them manually.
The File Finder found several files of this size or smaller, but since I do not know the date of creation of the file found by the disk maintainer, it would be Russian roulette to start deleting them. It is not the size of the occupied space that causes the problem, but the file garbage with a temporary status, but which cannot be removed.
I do not want to install a 3rd party maintenance application.
Do you create a disk maintenance log of uncompleted operations?
I have tried these so far:
  • unchecking all possible options for Microsoft Edge freeing up space (no other browser installed)
  • cleanmgr running in safe mode
  • run Storage Assistant
  • remove *.tmp, *bac, *old files from the system drive
  • C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\IE
  • manual deletion of the contents of C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Cache\Cache_Data directory

Windows Build/Version

You probably did it, but toclear your browser cache and cookies in Edge go to Settings > Privacy > Clear browsing data and select Ctrl+Shift+Del. You can also type "edge://settings/clearbrowserdata" in your address bar to access this function.

This was the very first one I did.
The result was that I lost the address of every website I visited and was left with 455 bytes of garbage.

Since you might repeat such measures in the future whilst investigating the subject, might I suggest using
NirSoft BrowsingHistoryView
and its File menu, Save selected items [visited web addresses] in one of its htm formats [I prefer the vertical format] before cleaning out data.

Best of luck,
Denis

That is part of what what clearing cache does. You had the option there of choosing what you did or did not want to clear.
left with 455 bytes of garbage.
If you are using the correct term of measurement I feel you are concerned unnecessarily as
455 bytes = only 3,640 bits of data. Each bit contains only a 1 or an 0. It's the smallest building block of storage. In computer speak 3,640 bits is too small to even mention. There would probably be that amount of temporary data just by having the browser open to be able to clear you cache in the first place.

I understand.
So the file cannot be deleted because it is too small.
I think I'm going to throw away my admin credentials today.

So the file cannot be deleted because it is too small.
It's size has nothing to do with it. IMO It's probably a tiny amount of instruction set data the system retains for whatever it's reason. More than likely the retained file is owned by the system and not you. Who knows what those 3,640 ones and zeros controls....except the browser and Windows. Just because you are admin does not mean that you can delete anything you want....well, I guess you could if you started messing with permissions you aren't meant to mess with that can cause unexpected end results. It's your choice if you pursue it in that manner.

Navigate thus

Control Panel => Internet Properties => General => Settings

and the lcation of the Temporary Internet Files is shown at near the bottom of the displayed window; in my case, D:\Temporary Internet Files

Definitely.
I would be less surprised if it had classed it, albeit incorrectly, as a Potentially unwanted programme.
