Outlook for Windows

I'm a long time Office user, and consequently have been using Outlook for many years.
Microsoft has started introducing Outlook for Windows, but I haven't even bothered to look at it yet.

Is anyone thinking of using Outlook for Windows as their main email and calendar client?

Nope. I predict some excellent functional options will disappear. I am sticking with the Office 2021 Outlook for as long as I can.

Office comes with Outlook, as does Windows 11 having Outlook in the Microsoft Store. Outlook's Outlook has been replaced by a 'new' version & is the same as the version from the store.

I have been using Outlook for ages now, without any issues at all.
If you look at the top right corner of Office's Outlook, there may be a switch to select the 'new' Outlook, & you can change back & forth as required.

I think you're right.
It'd be very silly for Microsoft to provide equivalent functionality.

Having said that. Some people might want a more basic client. It's not for me, though.

You’re right, Stigg, to simplify is to sacrifice. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t just have Outlook & Outlook Lite, which is basically what they have now.

Like many others I have both Office Professional 2021 and the Microsoft 365 version and after seeing this thread been interested in finding out a little more, particularly about Outlook. Was reassured to see that my 2021 version was being updated regularly and is currently at version 2309 October 10 so no point at all in retaining the cut down 365 version and have removed it.

I have Microsoft 365 and was offered the new Outlook. I checked it out and immediately went back to my regular Microsoft 365 Outlook.

Even Outlook has previewers. I guess the new Outlook for Windows handles it differently.

Stigg, I think your conclusions about Outlook for Windows will be colored by which 'Outlook' you use now. I think the users who use Outlook.com will have a different view than those who are long term [I hat to say 'old'] users of desktop Outlook in one of its various forms with a lifetime of desktop Outlook PST files and account folders. Keep in mind that Outlook for Windows also has a new People [previous Contacts] and a replacement Calendar app. It is not a trivial decision and having a 'Toggle' is not a placebo.

My first Windows mail app that I ever used was Outlook Express. That was a very long time ago.
I switched to Outlook many years ago, and have never changed. Of course, Outlook is more than just email.
I also used Microsoft Schedule+ many years ago, which most of its functionality was eventually integrated into Outlook.

I dont use it , MS-0ffice 21 Pro Plus is good enough for me .........though wont uninstall this "new" Outlook either..........

Anyone who has been used to the fully featured Microsoft Outlook is unlikely to be persuaded into using anything else.

But if someone is only looking for a basic email client without all the other components that Outlook has, then a lot of people seem to say positive things about OE Classic.

Thanks for that link Looks very interesting !!!!.

For simplicity, multiple accounts including corporate servers etc the best (IMHO) SIMPLE client was the old OUTLOOK EXPRESS in XP. All other "Free" or built in apps were again IMHO vastly inferior.

On a mobile phone the Outlook offering by MS is just junk -- the Samsung Android email thing is fine and it works -- although I'm usually very sceptical of "canned phone apps" from the phone manufacturers.

There's only 2 email clients I'd even think of using now --- Outlook (as in the Office LTSC 2021 package or perhaps its equivalent in Office/365) or Thunderbird (grossly improved since it was taken out of life support and now actively in continuous development). Some I know like eMail etc but there we are.

I still wish development had continued on Outlook Express for those who don't need a full featured email client.

Maybe this OE classic development might be "just what the doctor ordered" for those who just need a simple email client.

Have ordered a copy of the PRO version --well worth the extra @ approx 27 EUR -- I don't have to pay VAT or US sales tax so my price in EUR is approx the US price.

Update -- works brilliantly

Not sure what the UK charges --their VAT is a wallet busting 25% so I'd imagine their embattled govt currently lagging by a country mile (post Brexit can't say Km) in the polls before their next Gen. Election which has to be held soonish might do something about that though !!--- and for colleagues who want a decent email client who don't have Ms Office this is an excellent choice.
