I've updated all drivers and everything.

In windows 10, sleep /wake works fine

In windows 11, sleep is totally broken. It shuts down halfway, i.e. the hard drive powers down, but the cpu fan keeps running.
I can't wake up the pc either.

if i enable hibernate, win11 shuts down completely instead of hibernating. All my work is lost.

edit: actually sometimes Sleep will trigger a system shut off. Like hibernate, this will cause a total shutdown and lose all my data.

This is an older PC for testing new OS,
Furthermore: 4 Dell/HP laptops on Win7 Ultimate x64, used for NAS, Media server, browsing, workshop and sound studio
Or it's the display driver. Was that amongst your re-installs?

Look for an updated one on the OEM's website to install or at least reinstall an existing one.

I noticed that if you use AMD High performance, it doesn't go to sleep, so just use the normal High Performance power plan.

+1 for checking display (GPU) drivers. That's one of the most common causes of sleep issues.

i have the latest gpu drivers
this is intel 12600k integrated graphics.

MSI pro z690-A ddr4 motherboard.
latest board drivers too.
I've installed everything the motherboard oem supplied.

I have win10 and win11 dual boot, so I can compare everything in device manager.
I can't see a difference in setup between the two.
So I dunno why sleep is broken on win11. but fully working in win10.

Reinstalling it can fix sleep problems.
It's not so much having the latest version but more running the installation procedure that fixes things.

i just erased windows 11 and installed win 10+10 dual boot from a fresh w10 iso created today with microsoft media tool.

on the fresh w10 install, with all the same drivers installed from the same files, sleep works perfectly.

something is wrong with win11. All the exact same setup, and w11 sleep is totally broken.

weird

Perhaps you could find out what your computer maker says about compatibility with Windows 11?
Perhaps the computer maker will eventually publish Windows 11 hardware drivers?

All the best,

ok. i reinstalled windows 11 and sleep works now.

dunno why it didn't work the first time. Maybe windows update messed it up.

but now clean out of the box, sleep works in w11.

Update- w11 connected to windows update again, and sleep is completely broken again.

as i suspected
Stupid windows update breaks sleep.

Windows update keeps the pc in half-shutdown state.
cpu fan keeps spinning, and cannot wake up computer from keyboard or mouse. Must hard shutdown pc, and power on to get to windows again.

If i stop the Windows Update service, manual sleep works again.

However, auto sleep after idle is still broken. I set my sleep timer to 1 minute, and it will not auto sleep.

Any workaround?

Windows 10 sleep/auto-sleep works perfectly.

Does the response to this command say that you have S3 Sleep?
Code:
powercfg -a
Or do you have S0 Modern standby [aka S0 Low Power Idle) instead?
