Windows 11
Dell XPS8940 Desktop 64GB RAM 2TB Primary SSD
Windows Version 22H2
OS Build: 22621.1702
SYNOLOGY NAS: DS1821+with 16GB RAM and SYNOGY 400GB SSD drives as a cache. The NAS is running the latest DSM Version 7.1

I am getting extremely slow file transfers of an 8GB ISO file to a SYNOLOGY DS1821+ NAS of around 43MB/s. If I transfer the file from the DS1821+ NAS to the Dell XPS8940 the transfer speed is 113MB/s. I am using Windows File Explorer to transfer the files and I have the NAS drive mapped to a specific drive letter.

I have Microsoft Windows configured to use SMB3 and SMB Direct is checked, All SMB1 options have been disabled.

I may have determined the issue and am doing some final testing to confirm. The Dell XPS8940 is connected to a Xfinity XB7 Modem / Router via the 2.5GB Ethernet port. I have Dell XPS8920 connected to the same TP-LINK 1G Ethernet switch that the DS1821+ is connected to. The transfer rate on the Dell XPS8920 was about 113 MB/s in both directions.

I then moved the Dell XPS8940 to the same TP-LINK 1G switch and the transfer rate was 113 MB/S in both directions.

The final test was to move the Dell XPS8940 back to the 2.5GB connection on the Xfinity Modem / Router. I confirmed that the Windows 11 reported link speed was 2500 / 2500. The transfer rate was 113 MB/s in both directions.

The TP-LINK switches were not reporting any Ethernet Errors and the Xfinity XB7 does not provide that diagnostic information.

I am going to let the system run tonight and check it again in the morning.

For simple file transfer both ways I recommend you install filezilla --it's free and quite fast.

Interface looks like this : (and if transferring over over the internet the sftp protocol encrypts data as well for the transfer).

also if you have any really long path and file names > 266 chars it shows whole name not the windows d0s 8.3 format which makes the names look like rubbish.

Program can be got from here -- it's free and runs on Linux too. You need the CLIENT version.
