updating BIOS generates MS account problem

First off, I use a local account, so I am not signed in through Microsoft, only through Microsoft Store.

To midigate this issue I reset and repair the MS Store, sign out then sign in. And the message ends up to coming up after a week or so.
But I am not sure if this is coinsident or not.

Anyone have more information about this and perhaps a more instant solution??

I'm not 100% sure, but if you update the BIOS you are creating a new Computer, and you must re-activate windows.

Yeah the good old hybrid ms account usage just signing into a single or ms apps you want to use
This is just asking for ms to switch you over bottom line you give the os your ms account login

Bios update just likely whipped tpm info not your windows activation key.
Lucky you're not bitlocked without access to your info.

I should add that this message doesn't show on every boot maybe 1/10 .

Can I update the tpm?

I don't see any activation issue
This is purely a message to use a ms user account as you did with the store app but ms wants you to do it system wide in other words wave bye bye to local account.
You might be able to switch back to local account after.

Once you do sign into ms tpm should be recovered so they say anyway
TPM is beta usage no telling what will happen
You should get the bitlocker key on a usb flash drive as well.

Ok thanks for the info, yeah it might be MS nagging for using a local account. It's annoying and would be nice if this can be disabled. Also annoying that the wording is that there is a "problem" with my account...

Hi,
Eventually yes bitlocker will activate one day especially on 23h2
So have a flash drive ready to use otherwise you rely on ms to actually work and decrypt your data. lol

Thanks buddy, a backup of the key to Google Drive might be sufficient also?

A bit off topic, but how do I backup my key? Looking through settings like bitlocker window, and TPM administrator I can't see any options to do a backup.

Never happened to me updating the BIOS on my system. However, I've recently had some issues with Dell releasing an untested version which - somehow - got installed by Windows Update. All fixed now.

I just said have a flash drive ready when bitlocker does enable it's self
ATM it's not so no worries yet.

I see what you mean, yeah, a few spare usb sticks and drives are always is a space near me haha.

Bottom line if ever you need to decrypt data or os drives it would be faster if the key is local instead of waiting for ms to retrieve the key from ms servers.
Plus tpm is supposed to keep the key but bios updates may kill it.

I use an MS account. I don't use Bitlocker at all.

I have had a BIOS update eliminate my Windows PIN. I have never lost activation.

I'm pretty sure that a BIOS update shouldn't affect activation. There are a number of features MS uses to identify a PC. Its MAC address may be the most important. (Which means that if you swapped a motherboard for a nominally identical model, MS may see it as a new machine and require re-activation. That may be done transparently online.)

Yeah , it's a strange message if it's not through MS nagging about non local accounts .

It has to do something with TPM which also stores activation keys. When you update/change BIOS that resets too. Must be very careful if using Bitlocker and always have a key stored somewhere else. When you set TPM in BIOS it should ask you to keep or delete keys.

The TPM standard is nearly 15 years old. Why do you consider it to be "beta"?

It takes me about 30 seconds to reach my BitLocker recovery key at aka.ms/myrecoverykey from laptop or phone.

It would take me longer than that to locate the correct flash drive if it were stored locally.

Just last month I updated BIOS and chose to reset TPM data, windows lost activation but troubleshooter fixed it.
