Windows 11 Home Version 22H2 Build 22621.2861.

Hi I am currently having issues where my laptop crashes every other day for the last 3 weeks or so. In Event Viewer, I see 2 errors:
1. Event 24620, Bitlocker-Driver. Encrypted volume check: Volume information on cannot be read.
2. Event 7, Disk. The device, \Device\Harddisk)\DR0, has a bad block.

Firstly I am using Windows 11 Home, which does not come with Bitlocker. Secondly, I used scandisk, check disk and DISM and there are no bad blocks on my drive. The notebook is only one year old, and I use it for work.

I could not find any solutions on Google. I really hate to reinstall Windows.

Please help, thanks!

Darren

No, but in Home version, by default modern standby devices do automatically enable a feature called device encryption. Unlike with standard bitlocker where the user can choose which drives to encrypt, device encryption encrypts all drives.

Event 7 indicates a failing drive. I suggest you back up your data immediately. If you have more than one drive installed the full error should indicate which disk it is.

If your drive did have bad blocks, then those blocks have most likely been mapped as 'out of service' by the drives firmware.

So when you run chkdsk on the drive it will report as AOK.

Unfortunately, the bad blocks may have contained important data and with that data missing, it is now causing your issues.

I can only recommend that you reformat the drive and re-install Windows and hope it does not develop more bad blocks.

The only other option would be to replace the drive.

As recommended by glasskuter, you should backup any important data beforehand.

Thanks guys, The SSD NVME M.2 drive is barely 13 months old. Guess I will have to reinstall Windows, which is a bummer.

My opinion differs. You may well have to reinstall Windows on another drive, but doing so on this drive does not test the health of the drive or do anything to fix the root cause of the problem. Personally, I would never reinstall windows on a drive that had already caused me problems. I would never trust it. Your issue is not Windows, but the drive. Depending on the brand of your m.2 it's manufacturer may well have its own app to test it. You can also try Seatools. But if your data is important to you, I strongly suggest backing up your data should take priority before going further in testing the drive.

Here is the V2 Log:

Thanks for all the advice. The drive is a Samsung MZVL2512HCJQ- 00B00 Gen4 X4 NVME M.2 SSD (512GB) which is my C: and Windows 11 Home is installed on it. All my data, documents, and media are kept on my D: which is another M.2 NVME SSD Gen3 (1TB) from Kingston. So no danger of data loss. My laptop's data is also automatically backed up to my NAS daily.

The laptop is from a small boutique in Malaysia called Level51 which rebrands Clevo laptops. The model is based on Clevo's NP55PNP, with an Intel 12500H CPU, 32GB RAM, and RTX3060 GPU. The laptop is only 13 months old, and the C: is barely 50% full. The health indicator in Windows 11 says that the state of the C: SSD is Healthy with an estimated remaining life of 96%, available spare of 96%, and temperature of 47C after 6 hours of working on the laptop. I downloaded the Samsung Magician Software, a set of tools for Samsung SSDs, and ran the benchmark. results are Sequential read: 5319 MB/s, Sequential Write: 4177 MB/s.

I think it is not a bad sector but please have look. Thank you for all your help!

Be sure to verify in disk management which drive is drive 0. I was surprised in my case, my system assigned my storage drive as drive 0, my system drive as drive 1

This is far from the first time that I've seen this problem with a Clevo laptop. The issue is the Clevo Hotkey (Control Center) software. All your dumps are identical, they all fail with the HKKbdFltr.sys filter driver, which is part of the Hotkey (Control Center) product. The version of HKKbdFltr.sys that you have installed is quite old...
Code:
6: kd> lmvm HKKbdFltr

start end module name

    Information from resource tables:
There is a later version of Hotkey (Control Center) for your model on the Clevo download site. I would upgrade to that version (it's dated 29th August 2022). It would be worth checking all your other driver versions too, and update from the Clevo website - most divers there seem to be dated in 2022.

The drives firmware should have mapped those sectors as 'out of service', but since it has not done so, I would definitely replace the drive.

It is possible that you could reformat it and have no more issues with the drive, but that is not a risk I would be willing to take.

If you wish, you can delete all partitions then re-install Windows.

SSD's are relatively cheap these days, but It's your call.

Thanks, that's what I thought. It is a bargain bin drive from Samsung for Clevo laptops. They had to save money somewhere to make a profit. I am going to get a new one and use the faulty drive with an external enclosure for occasional use. Thank you all for the assist!

Once the drive is tested with Sea Tools and HD Tune run ACP chkdsk /b /v on all drives using the syntax: chkdsk /b /v C: or chkdsk /b /v D: or chkdsk /b /v E:

If the Long Generic test displays fail then manually backup files and replace the drive.

Make sure that the chkdsk switches run on the Windows drive overnight while sleeping.
