changing notepad icon

Hello! I've spent days trying to figure this out and I can't. I managed to change the txt file icon, but not for the notepad itself and it bothers me so much. If anyone could show me how to do this I'd be so grateful! I tried making a shortcut and changing the icon of that instead, but that still gives me the default icon on the taskbar when I open a document.

You can not change the icon of UWP/store apps in the taskbar, they are protected from tampering.
But you can change their shortcut, so maybe if you would use 3rd party taskbar app, it might work?

I moved to Notepad++ years ago. Much better

If you go to your start menu and drag and drop the icon to the desktop, you can change the icon on the desktop, but it won't change it anywhere else.

That sucks, but I will download Notepad++ and maybe try a 3rd party taskbar then. Thanks for the replies everyone.

You can do it with FileTypesMan.

That's actually a very good recommendation. Nirsoft utilities are generally great nuggets from a goldmine.

This might help,

You can do it easily if you use the win 32 legacy notepad. Create a shortcut of Notepad.exe and rename to Notepad and change icon in properties. Drag to the taskbar. Otherwise you'll have to follow the guide in the link. I've not tried it.





EDIT: if you unpin the modern App notepad from the taskbar and then select the changed notepad.exe icon it will still open the modern app notepad.

Thanks for all your suggestions everyone, I will try them each one by one. So far I've tried using FileTypesMan, and this is the message I get:

edit; I don't know if this is the correct notepad? since it has a different default icon than the one that shows up on my taskbar

Yes, you can't do it in Filestypeman and it won't even 'see' modern apps.

This what is the FileTypesMan I use.

FileTypesMan: Right clic on it and choose edit selected file type/Default icon. Clic on the ... and go to the icon where you saved it and of course you want to use.

And how it looks on my pc.

I already mentioned that FileTypesMan won't do it. It changes file icons only.
The easiest way to do it, if you don't mind using Notepad legacy only, is to see my post #10 then uninstall the modern Notepad app.

I can not find Notepad legacy in the Microsoft store, how I get it? Want to change it also. Sorry Rosapanda for forgetting your question for 50%.
