Edge remains running

I use Firefox as my main browser but sometimes I use Edge.
I've done everything so that Edge is loaded only when I run it
- Disable Startup boost
- Disable all on register run

Still have it running after I close it.
What can I do?

How long is Edge process running after you close it? Had you tried checking after, say, 20 minutes since closing the browser window? Is it still running after sending the computer to Sleep? Or after CNTRL+ALT+DEL (Switch User)?

Actually, I like Edge, it's just that having 3 different versions of it create a lot of sync issues I think.
This result is over 32 active processes and 6% of RAM used when all browsers are closed.
It's OK, I kill those from the taskbar.

I just checked. I already have the file: IntegratedServicesRegionPolicySet.json ...in the System32 folder.
I haven't played around with editing that file yet, but it's nice to know it's in there.

That file has enable/disable toggles for a LOT of stuff...

Here is what it controls:

Edge is uninstallable
User can disable web search
Narrator scripting extensions are enabled
File Explorer Search is third party extensible
First party File Explorer Search is allowed
Featured apps show in Open With dialog
Third party search providers show in search
Third party search highlight content in search zero input

msedge.exe is also automatically triggered whenever you launch Copilot.

From what I've read the file settings, "make" the registry changes. Like Group Policy, I guess?
The file is new. Mine shows an Oct 26th 2023 date. ^^

Also, it seems the only difficult part with editing that file, is the country-codes-allowed-list.
The US doesn't show in those lists very often. :)

I did hear about that, but it makes me wonder if the enable/disable toggle is usable in a country not on the list.

Maybe, it would have to match the registry value of the system.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

There are other keys as well for region/country.
You would need to disable the location permission in Privacy as well.
MS store would also be of concern.
Too many unknowns for me.

Can a bat file be created under PS so that it loads edge and when you close edge it will kill it on the background?

Something like
call MSedge
pskill msedge

At the bottom of the 2nd article there are Vivetool ID numbers. I tried them last night... no effect.
But I'm on the regular channel.

Please note that the changes won't have any effect on Stable versions of Windows 10 or 11 at the time. This is going to change soon, but it is always a good idea to be prepared. Once the changes land, you may enable certain settings that Microsoft won't enable by default until March 2024.

bat files or .cmd files are batch or script files, using powershell is another scripting method.
Now you can run them either way but a .bat or .cmd uses the command interpreter. (.bat used to be 16 bit, then with NT came .cmd)
So yeah, in theory, I don't see why not. Try it.
I prefer to do it on demand.

Also, you don't 'call' an .exe, you 'start' it and you use 'start /wait' before returning control to the batch.
So yeah, in theory, I don't see why not. Try it.
I prefer to do it on demand.

I used to do batch files on the DOS era.
As you seem to be good in PS, can you write it for me?
