Solved Fast Startup and NVME SSDs

I always believed that there was nothing to be gained by having Fast Startup (FSU) 'On' if the OS is on Nvme SSDs but the following thread caused me to check it out: -

Have I been wrong all this time?
Does it matter that the "Protected by HP Sure Start" splash screen no longer has time to display if FSU is 'On'?
Does it mean the "HP Sure Start" protection has not run or has it just not had time to display the splash screen?

Any HP experts out there?

Fast startup is a form of hibernation so when you shut down it just logs you out and hibernates the files so your HP Sure start has already been ran previously.

Thanks for that. Yes, it makes sense now. The fact that HPSS does not run again afterwards is irrelevant because the protection it offers only applies when booting again after a full shut down.

Seems safe therefore to switch FSU 'On' but am I right that it is good practice to perform a 'restart' from time-to-time in order to 'refresh' the Hiberfil.sys and other files used by Hibernate process? I believe that Restart does not use the Hibernate?

Yes a restart does that. Restart sometimes gets used if you get a recurring problem after booting if using fast start.

I ended up disabling fast start with my nvme drive. I found you get too many inexplicable startup behaviour when multibooting.

On my device, fast start only saved less than 5 seconds, so that is a small price for more stable behaviour.

I turn off fast start on EVERY system I service.

I am in full agreement with @Porthos . I do the same for my own and my clients' computers.

It can cause some really strange issues on occasion. IMHO, it is not worth it.

Yes, you are right. I'll leave FSU turned 'Off'. What does it matter if it takes another 16 seconds to boot up? It's not as if I can do anything meaningful with that extra 16 seconds in my life. Better to have a more stable boot process.
