Hi,

An odd issue, I know. I tested it with other files and it doesn't appear to be happening with any other files.

But if I ceate a screenshot with Snip tool and then right click it to select Delete, I never get that far... As soon as I Right Click, the whole File Explorer closes.

This mini laptop is quite new and I am still getting used to it. But it is the only device I have with Windows 11 on it.

Does anyone know how I stop Explorer crashing?

Thank you

(In other news; while looking for my system specs, I found this device now costs £70 more than a month ago... can't think why!)

It's a Mini Laptop, but on some sites it behaves as if it is a tablet (YouTube for example), I guess because of the small screen.
Are you using WinKey+Shift+S to open the snipping tool? Are you then clicking the Notification to open Snip&Sketch to manipulate or save the clip? I usually click the X to close without saving unless wanting to save it.

Hi thanks

I wasnt, no. I use it a lot on my big laptop, and it works totally differently on this mini laptop. I attached Snipping Tool to my taskbar, and that's how I open it.

Also mine is called Snipping Tool, not Snip & Sketch.

It is also saving them without me doing anything. Clicking the X just closes it, but it is already saved and named with the time and date, which saves me a step.

But come to think of it, could it be a bug?

I will try and do it how you suggest, and look at Snip & Sketch, and get back to you.

Thanks

I just did Win + Shift + S and it took the screenshot, but I got no notification or even any way of knowing it had been saved.

It had been saved though.

But it still crashed when I right clicked on it. Will try and get Snip & Sketch...

thanks

That key combo copies what one selects to the Clipboard for use in Pasting into a program. The Snipping Tool use that data as can Paint or any other graphic editor. An example of what the Notification shows and usually saves as Screenshot with some numbers such as Screenshot 2022-12-08 171932.png after it has been saved in the Pictures folder by the Snipping Tool:

My Snipping Tool is set for the Print Screen Key. But it really doesn't matter how you get to it. After taking the screenshot it is saved in the clipboard, so what I do is paste it into paint. Modify it as I will and save it as a jpeg. Try this and then try and delete the jpeg. Dose Explorer still crash? O! I just noted that you haven't been welcomed to the Forum! So Welcome to ElevenForum.

That key combo, Win Key + Shift + S or Print Screen key for me will initiate the Snipping Tool. Then you take the screenshot using the Sniping Tool options at the top of the screen. Then Initiate the photo editor of your choice and paste it in. "Those reading know how to do this right?" Then you edit the selected image and then save it as you will, png jpg jpeg, and so on. It's just a sequence you have to follow with the capturing. Unless you have a simple way you have used? I'd like to see it.

Thanks a lot Lance1

I am not given any option to save as anything. It doesn't even indicate that it saved at all, til I look in the folder.

I tried repairing Snipping Tool, then resetting, then uninstalling. It is now uninstalled. I have no snip tool. and yet if I right click on a sreenshot it still crashes Explorer.

I also tried to download Snip & Sketch from Microsoft Store, but it didn't give me the option (as if it no longer exists??) Only Snipping Tool that I had before.

I will try redownloading, and report back...

OK I just reinstalled Snipping Tool.

And I was able to select jpg. I had previously missed the options on the 3 dots to save as something else.

But sadly Explorer still crashed when I right clicked on the jpg screenshot as well.

Thanks Lance for the welcome!
(although I was a regular pain in the ass on the Ten forums too! :lmao: )

Let's try this from another Angle. Set your system up to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 11 Click the link and follow the instructions. When you are in a clean boot see if you have the same issue.

Thanks for this Berton. I don't get that pop up box at all.

Let's try this from another Angle. Set your system up to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 11 Click the link and follow the instructions. When you are in a clean boot see if you have the same issue.

Thank you Lance,

I am currently on the big laptop doing video editing. But I will definitley do that tomorrow and report back, thanks.

Hi Lance1

I just followed the link you supplied and I am at the end of Part 1. I just restarted after doing the clean boot, and I tried Right Clicking on a screenshot and it still closed File Explorer.

It says:
If the program still does not run as expected, this issue is not caused by application or service interference, and to ask for further help.

Incidentally, the issue still happened when the Snipping Tool had been uninstalled, before I re-installed it.

Thanks

It could be corrupt system files as well. Open an elevated command prompt (Administrative Rights) Type sfc /scannow and let it run. If it finds corruption restart your system and run it again till there is no more corruption found. Did this help?

Thanks Lance1 I did the scan, and it said there were corrupt files, but that it had repaired them.

I restarted the laptop and the problem still remains. It's not just screenshots either, but other folders in Explorer. If I right click on Pictures or Music it gives me a popup menu as expected but other folders, it does the same as screenshot files and just closes Explorer.

Thanks

OK. The only other suggestion is to Repair Install Windows 11 with an In-place Upgrade I hope that this fixes the issue.

Thank you, I will try that. I appreciate your help.

Edit:
I am going away on Friday til the New Year. I bought this mini laptop to take with me so I don't have to take my big laptop.

It's taken me a few weeks to get everything displaying as it should. Will an in-place upgrade get rid of all that?

If so, I will have to do it when I come back home in January, as I won't have time this week to get everything displaying as it is now.

Thanks

It's a Mini Laptop, but on some sites it behaves as if it is a tablet (YouTube for example), I guess because of the small screen.

Hi, I am on my big Windows 10 laptop. I amended the lid settings of the mini Lenovo last night, so that when I close the lid it shuts down.

But the power light stayed on all night.

And ever since I haven't been able to switch it on again. With my big laptop I am able to remove the battery, and start again. But the little laptop is all enclosed. It is still under warranty, so I will try and get it replaced from Currys. I might have to wait til new year now.

Thanks for all your help Lance1

I don't know if this will void your warranty, but if you are willing to try, you can remove the battery and reset the system. This is not the exact model, but the disassembly will be similar and it gives you an idea. You can view the video from the other laptop as you go step by step It's completely up to you.

Brilliant, thank you. I do have a mini screwdriver set. I will have a go tomorrow.

The LED light is still on, so there's still at least some power. I guess I'll have to be careful!
