Is Windows 11 a glorified Windows 10?

Win 11Pro v22H2 build 22621.819
Was playing Far Cry 6, which I have been playing since it was released, on Win 10 and then on Win 11. Been playing on 11 for 2 weeks without any issues until tonight. For some reason, FC6 crammed my video memory above maximum (using RTX 2070 Super with 8G video memory - see 1st attachment) making the game unplayable. Decided to try Assassins Creed Valhalla and had no issue (see 2nd attachment). Then I noticed, in the AC-V display, the OS information that said I was running Windows 10 Business Edition 64-bit. What the heck?? WINVER says Windows 11 so what is going on?

I think it's more likely that ACV isn't interpreting the Windows version properly. Just a guess.

There is a Registry entry that still says, "Windows 10". That's probably what your AC-V thing is reading.

And I take issue with "glorified". Overblown would more appropriate.

All the best,
Denis

What is the point of this post?

It is obvious W11 is only W10 with a new (imo crap) gui. There are bound to be a few hangovers from W10 not fully updated yet. Hell, there are bits in it that go back to W7.

Hi there.

Most users don't want or need a significant change to the GUI - although I for one would love Windows / File explorer to be replaced with something else -- even the old XP file explorer (called windows explorer) in those days looked better. The real things will appear under the hood -- I'm sure most people will want better security and certainly faster performance and better graphic cards. To support these - many of which require totally new CPU instructions would be almost impossible to implement in older versions of Windows (CPU instruction emulation is a very "expensive" business both in memory requirements and processing time). I'd bet a lot of people don't realize that running say a 32 bit OS on a 64bit CPU - apart from the 4GB RAM limit performs relatively poorly compared with the 64 bit CPU running a 64 BIT OS as all the relevant instruction sets have to be intercepted, decoded, translated and set ready for execution.

We won't see any significant change to the base look of the OS I'm sure. OK bits of it are hideous e.g some don't like the new start menu -- I really couldn't be bothered with that one as I tend to run most things either from command line or the task bar.

I'd be quite happy to have the XP "LUNAR Black" theme so long as all the other improvements in the base OS still work.

For those who want different GUI's there's plenty of other alternatives -- some like the (Cr-)Apple interface for example.

Cheers
jimbo

Try running DXDIAG and check report .
ik022,

The Windows 11 Registry still reports the OS as Windows 10 in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
ProductName
so it might well be that value that the OP's AC-V thing is reading.

I thought MS might have corrected this in a CU by now but it remains true in
Windows 11 Home x64 Version 21H2 Build 22000.318

This is also mentioned, along with a workaround, in
ReportOSVersion.bat post - TenForums

All the best,
Denis

To be honest, I'm not 100% why this matters.
Could it be that the software doesn't recognize anything above Windows 10 in terms of reporting the OS?
I also wonder if that registry entry is there to prevent software from reading Windows 11 as an incompatible OS version and not installing the software.
Just some random thoughts...

"And I take issue with "glorified". Overblown would more appropriate."
overblown: excessively inflated or pretentious.

But I suppose there are people who enjoy excessively inflated or pretentious.

and

crap: something of extremely poor quality.

So, if Windows 11 is excessively inflated, pretentious, and of extremely poor quality, why not just go back to Windows 10?

I do have to agree with @NavyLCDR, people have taken shots at Windows 11 alluding to it being a subpar Windows iteration, some inferring that it's nothing more than Windows 10 with a new GUI.

No offense to anyone, mind you. It's just how I read the posts. Those comments are a little off the OPs topic of the games reporting the OS as being Windows 10 and wanting to know if there was a solution. Comments like those aren't solutions or explanations other than overt lambastes of Windows 11.
