Network and Internet Add or Remove Share Context Menu in Windows 11

Share_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the Share context menu from files for your account or all users in Windows 11.

When you right click on one or more selected files, click/tap on Show more options, and click/tap on Share, you will then be able to share the file(s) using nearby sharing or an app of your choice.

Share.jpg

This remove Share from the old Shift+Right Click context menu, after you click/tap on Show more options.

This will also remove Share from the command bar (toolbar) at the top of the new Show more options context menu.

This will not remove Share from within the new Show more options context menu though.

Contents

  • Option One: Add or Remove "Share" Context Menu for Current User
  • Option Two: Add or Remove "Share" Context Menu for All Users

EXAMPLE: Share on toolbar of new context menu, and Share on Shift+Right Click context menu

Some under the hood changes from MS. The Windows 10 reg file to remove share doesn't work in Windows 11. Thankfully, the Windows 11 version does! (y)

Is there a new way to remove this?

And is there a way to remove Share by Outlook?

I even don't have Outlook installed on my OS... or even a @outlook.com email account, so I have no clue what MS is trying to accomplish here:

Hello, :alien:

Just to note, this will only remove "Share" from the Shift + Right Click (old) context menu, and not from the new one.

While you must be signed in as an administrator to add or remove the Share context menu, all users will be able to use the context menu.
This will not remove Share from the new Show more options context menu.

It will only remove Share from the old Shift+Right Click context menu, or after you click/tap on Show more options.
If you remove share from the context menu by blocking the extension instead it is removed from both context menus.

You can also perform this for the current user without admin rights.
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Blocked]
"{e2bf9676-5f8f-435c-97eb-11607a5bedf7}"="Modern Sharing"
I haven't tested the alternative version of this for all users, changing the value in HKLM, but I'm sure it will work. My guess is that in future we'll be blocking more Shell Extensions. The obvious proviso is that if we want to block a context menu only for some extensions this won't work.

Hello Mike, :alien:

I tested this, but it only removed "Share" from the Shift+Right-click context menu after restarting the explorer process, and not from the default new context menu.

I went ahead and updated the tutorial for this since it can be used with a "Current user" or "All users" options.

My mistake. I was looking at the row of icons on the default new context menu, and the share icon disappears from there whichever way you deal with the context menu issue. (Which seems very odd.)

For completeness I should point out that blocking the extension should presumably remove the option from MSGraphDocument and MSGraphDocument_38664959 which also have this context menu. I don't why, wouldn't they be included in AllFilesystemObjects?

I should also show a user level method of only removing the context menu from AllFilesystemObjects:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\ModernSharing]
@=""
This simply prevents explorer from being able to find the extension. It's the method I originally came up with to remove shellex context menu items on a per-user basis. The neatest way to see what is happening is to open to regedit instances (use regedit /m to do this) point one at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\ModernSharing , make the change in the other regedit instance, and then refresh the HKCR window and watch the GUID disappear.

You don't have to restart Explorer for this to take effect. It's an interesting question as to which you should choose. Extension blocking is obviously the way to go for the Skype context menu (usually seen in windows 10), because otherwise every time Skype was updated the context menu would come back, presumably this would apply to any modern app that set that kind of context menu.

Hi, I just tested this on my Windows 11 PC and it's not working for me. Specifically, I still have "Share" on the Show more options menu, ie. the new Windows 11 menu, although it has been removed from the Shift + right-click menu.

I can confirm that the GUID is removed from both of these locations:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\ModernSharing
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\ModernSharing

Have you actually tested and confirmed that "Share" has been removed from the Show more options menu?

This remove Share from the old Shift+Right Click context menu, after you click/tap on Show more options.

This will also remove Share from the command bar (toolbar) at the top of the new Show more options context menu.

This will not remove Share from within the new Show more options context menu though.

If you look at the start of this thread, you'll see what should happen on the new context menu.

I think I tested this, but didn't make contemporaneous notes, so I have retested. The effects are exactly as described in the snippet from @Brink above. The change to the new Windows 11 menu is to remove the share icon from the command bar. The "Share" item stays. @Brink provides illustrative screenshots as well in the top post.
I haven't been able to find any way to remove the other Share entry from the new windows 11 context menu.

Hi Mike,

I'm aware of what's written in the top post of this page - where Brink wrote, "This will not remove Share from within the new Show more options context menu" - however, that statement is referring to the Registry keys that are described in the top post, such as this one, which Brink has provided screenshots for:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Blocked]
"{e2bf9676-5f8f-435c-97eb-11607a5bedf7}"=-

But in your comment on 3 May, you provided a completely different Registry key, referring to "AllFilesystemObjects" (to be honest I'm not sure what that means) and saying "This simply prevents explorer from being able to find the extension":

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\ModernSharing]
@=""

I assumed you were providing a new solution to removing Share from the "show more options" context menu. So my comment above was to say that I didn't observe any change when I implemented this new Registry key you've provided, which is not the same key that is described in the top post.

I hope that clears up what I meant! :)

Anyway, you've now confirmed that you haven't found any new method for removing it from the "show more options" menu, so I guess we have to live with having it there.

AllFilesystemObjects simply means any file or directory. Context menu items such as this have to be associated with some kind of file or folder. In this case it means that the context menu item will appear for any file or directory.

"Modern Sharing" is a type of context menu that uses a shell extension (a DLL). To stop it from working you can either list the extension in the blocked list, or stop windows from finding the extension. The extensions are found by looking up using the GUID (in this case {e2bf9676-5f8f-435c-97eb-11607a5bedf7}).

If you look in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\ModernSharing
you'll see the same GUID.

Which method you use depends on whether you want to be specific about the file type, or catch everything. In some case, such as image rotation, blocking the extension ( {FFE2A43C-56B9-4bf5-9A79-CC6D4285608A} ) is a lot simpler than blocking for each image file type.

It is all a bit complicated, and this is probably more detailed than you are interested in.

Mike

Hello all. Let me first start by saying thanks for this auto registry edit. I have used these and many others I've found on the site to tweak various things, and they are a life saver (vs having to manually edit the registry myself).

I started a separate topic on this, but someone directed me to the thread here, to perhaps get some more targeted advice on where I am (which seems like where some others may be stuck as well).

So this is how far I've come thus far...

I'm also on Windows 11, and after running the registry key, I have confirmed that "Share" has been removed from all folder's context menu. And it has even been removed from the classic "Show more options" context menu on files. However, the one I'm still needing to remove is the new Windows 11 context menu "Share" option on files. I read through everything above, and I'm not seeing if a fix for that has been found yet.

This is the one I'm referring to (the one listed as "Doesn't remove" from your image above):

I'm very close to getting this removed from all entries. Has anyone been able to zero on on where this last "Share" entry in the new Windows context menu for just files is located? It's the top menu when you first right-click. Again, I've already been able to remove the exact same entry for all folders, with your handy registry edit. Just need that last step (if available). Thanks!

This tutorial will give you the classic (like Win 10), context menu(s).

I did the one above, then did the remove Share tutorial, and Share is... gone.
The ones in the RED boxes, I added using other tutorials. :-)

First...thanks a lot for the reply @Ghot!

Having said that...I like the new Windows 11 context menu (probably an unpopular opinion I know lol :p).

So is there a way to remove the last "Share" entry from the context menu of files while keeping the same/new Windows version of the right click menu I shared in the image above? As I said, I've gotten it removed from all folders thus far, just need to target files on this top menu now.

Thanks!

You might try ShellExView, that was mentioned in your other topic...

Sometimes when you change one thing, you might have to change one or two others, to get the results you want. :-)
