I would not recommend disabling updates. Windows has millions of ways it can be customized and other programs you can use. You can turn off widgets and remove the windows store apps you dont want and never touch them if the ads bother you. I never see ads on my windows install.

1. Windows Update Blocker v1.8
2. Block svchost.exe in the firewall, ports 80/443 to avoid blocking DHCP/DNS,
still it will block updating certificates needed by browsers! So use temporarily.
3. Create a nonexistent symlink, but it will probably block MS store updates as well!

That stops automatic updates [except for one very small boring one about once a year].
I then do updates each month by
- downloading them form the MSUpdateCatalog [links normally given in the ElevenForum News article about each update], or
- running WU myself then telling it to download & install its updates

Open the Run windows with the Windows key + R and type ‘gpedit.msc’ to load the Group Policy Editor. From here, you’ll need to know which version of Windows you have.

For example, navigate to: “Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Windows Update for *your version*”.

From here, double-click ‘Select The Target Feature Update Version’ under the ‘Setting’ header. You’ll need to set this policy to ‘Enabled’ and type ‘22H2’ into the corresponding field.

Close the Group Policy Editor and you are done.

No, those certificates are used by all browsers, if not updated, webpages will stop loading, based on the date.

Pausing updates one or more weeks works for me. Sometimes I pause for weeks then come back when I have time to watch and either reenable or extend the pause time. If I reenable then I watch to see what's starting to install and pause again if I don't like what I see. But yea, takes some monitoring periodically.

Hi,
Yeah there's vicious rumor that local news outlet show current and projected weather and current events local and around the world on their websites and one can access them with any browser they please :boom:

So yeah ditch the MS apps man if the adds are bothering you and install ublock origin add-on to which ever browser you prefer to take care of those pesky adds they host.

As posted there is a updates pause for up to 20 years available but it will not effect store apps or defender updates I don't believe.

hi
but does this trick to pause the update for 20years stop to download updates?
or just will stop the notify to to install?
by the way , microsoft weather is full of ads , unbelievable ,maybe it's because i'm in Central Europe
maybe in other nations ,there are disabled
i'm thinking if the ads are included to the windows 11 price

I have no idea why you ask about preventing updates and then keep talking about ads instead.
They are different subjects.
