Asus UX461UA suspends whenever I lock (sleep mode), put laptop to sleep or close lid.

Hi,

Been using this UX461UA for years and I have no idea what is wrong with the laptop. This problem has been going since Windows 10 until upgrade to Windows 11 is still there. When I lock the laptop, sleep or shut down and immediately close the lid, or whatever triggers the sleep mode and then it becomes black. What I noticed is that the power button is blinking and the back of the laptop is hot. It seems like the laptop is running something in the background. If it is not connected to the power supply, the battery will drain until empty, so when I go to turn on the laptop again, I need the power supply.

I suspect there is something wrong with the sleep mode of this laptop as I can make it shut down properly, but need to wait for the sequence of shut down to occur than only close the lid. I installed Windows 11 when it was first released. I did do a clean install. Any ideas?

Open a command prompt as admin and type powercfg -a
Please post a screenshot of result. Since you mention that it gets hot and the battery drains, I would be willing to bet you are using modern standby (S0) rather than S3 sleep. There have been others experiencing the same thing as you and some (but not all) have been able to disable modern standby and use S3 sleep. You can try disabling modern standby (if you are indeed using S0 modern standby).

This tutorial explains the different sleep states and how to disable modern standby, if your motherboard supports it. The comments on the tutorial are quite informative, too.

Here is the status.

The following sleep states are available on this system:
Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) Network Connected
Hibernate
Fast Startup

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.
This standby state is disabled when S0 low power idle is supported.

Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.
This standby state is disabled when S0 low power idle is supported.

Standby (S3)
This standby state is disabled when S0 low power idle is supported.

Hybrid Sleep
Standby (S3) is not available.

If you are unable to disable modern standby using the tutorial, for the overheating and battery drain issues it causes, the consensus has been that the only option left is to turn it off or use hibernate. You can do an advanced search on the forum for "modern standby" and "modern sleep" (put the quotations around them in your search)and see what kinds of issues it causes and what others have done to try to resolve it. One bit of advice, Never put the laptop in a case unless it is shut down.
