Is office still an installable program?

So the teenager has his new surface pro 9 for his birthday. We were going to get a full copy of Office rather than 365 but (and assume I'm behind date here) it says Microsoft Office is no more and it looks like you can only get Office 365 - is that right?

That's basically just a re-brand of the Office Suite App...

You can install Microsoft Office 2021 LTSC for free from Github.

This is the last standalone Microsoft Office suite.

Microsoft would rather have you work in the cloud through Microsoft Office 365.

Thanks. I just couldn't find a Microsoft page for actually buying Office 2021 student and home. Assume 2021 was the last one.

They hide it well, but it's on the Office website. If you scroll down far enough there's a Home & Business version at £249.99 if you need Outlook too. Whether you buy it, or subscribe to 365, you'll get the same version of Office. 365 will of course get upgraded to Office 2024 on release. A one-time purchase won't.


Office 2021 is the current version, Office 2024 is expected later this year.

On November 14, 2023, Microsoft announced Office 2024, expected to be rolled out in the second half of 2024. The announcement was a reversal of their decision to discontinue the Office brand in January 2023. Like its predecessors, Office 2024 will be able to be purchased under a perpetual license for the desktop.

Keep your eyes peeled for StackSocial deals, John posts about them occasionally.

And I would personally be searching for a “Bind Key” because many keys for office don’t work again after reinstalling. “Bind Keys” are linked to your MS Account, normal ones are apparently just linked to your PC but are allowed by and connect to your MS Account.. Again, it depends on where you buy them. Seems confusing? It is.

But maybe if bought directly through Microsoft, that wouldn’t be a problem.

I bought MS Office 2019 Professional Plus a few years ago from a site called Software HUBs, they are a Microsoft certified partner authorized retailer.

That's not what any MSOffice licence says or ever has said.
The licence terms allow you to reinstall or move to another device every ninety days unless a hardware problem forces you to do so sooner.

I can tell you from experience that this can in fact happen, Denis. And on all 3 occasions, was the result of buying cheap keys I would suspect. A result of paying AU$12 for a key, which is probably about US$0.05, because Australia sucks.

I also suspect they were resold “OEM Licenses” which upon the reinstalling of Windows and then the loading of Microsoft Office 2021 Pro on the same day, rejected the key that was previously used. Telephone activation also did not work.
And as we know from threads here, this can also happen with Windows keys

Buyer beware. And as I mentioned, probably wouldn’t happen if buying directly from Microsoft. Now I just pay full price and claim it on my taxes.

So am I. And apparently no, not with used and resold OFFICE OEM Keys are hit and miss. They’re sold across the web, generally for under US20.00
I’ll look for the screenshot of how I became aware that I was being duped.

Invalid keys are invalid keys.
I responded to your statement about Office reinstallations not being allowed.

I will run against the crowd here and suggest that the parent (you?) really consider leasing 365 family as you can have up to 6 licenced users each with 1 TB cloudspace, and alway kept up to date.

In addition, each user can have it active on up to 6 devices. So if the teenager had a gaming desktop say, they could install it there as well.

Look at any cloudspace deal for space, and you will realise how good this deal is for families.

isos are available for office 2010, 2013, 2016 and 2019 which can all be installed "manually" - you need to have correct activation or keys for these products. Ms itself doesn't supply these any more though.

Some of you might even have old office isos from the technet program from several years back - these still install. IMO apart from EXCEL and more "groupware" features Office hasn't changed hugely from Office 2010 which still performs perfectly well on Win11 - even the latest insider releases. EXCEL for power users has though got decent extra features in it especially with getting data from all sorts of external sources, plus pivot tables etc -- but it's not too difficult to replicate most of that with EXCEL 2010. Outlook too has hardly changed since outlook 2010 either.

As for Office/365 people have different views on that -- so I'll leave that part of the discussion alone.

You can also get the older office ISO's from the various archive sites around the net -- but you still need legal activation keys.

Not being allowed with invalid keys, yes, what did you think I was talking about?
They're sold all over the place. Which is why I said at the bottom, it wouldn't happen if bought from Microsoft, cheap is cheap. It certainly doesn't say "This is cheap because it is invalid" when purchasing. Same goes for Windows Keys, just read the threads in here.
I don't buy invalid keys, until I accidentally/inadvertently did via buying cheap keys that turned out to be OEM keys taken from Scrap PC's. Again, they don't tell you that.
My posts are just a heads up to Hazel that when looking for a licensed copy of Office. cheap can backfire. Which may I add is easy to do when searching for a cheap deal, they're everywhere.
