Solved LG TV conn'd to AMD Mini PC is blinking/crackling

While booting the computer uses standard VESA display modes, not ideal for flicker. Inside Windows the graphics drivers take charge and remedies the issue.

If I understand you right, I'd say there's a battle going on right now between them both. After being booted for a minute the screen will go black a few times and suddenly everything looks a little brighter, as if the Windows drivers have taken over.

My problem is hasn't done this for over a year and so why now?

I'm really glad the majority of stuff is working, other than the boot thing.
Well the Great Unplugging/Replugging happened and matters only got worse.

I almost never watch the TV part of this LG and so I gave that a shot to see if the flickering was there. But it's not. This isolates the Beelink PC as the likely source. What I'm going to do now is hook up my wife's laptop to see if it flickers too. If not, something is wrong with the Mini. If yes, that laptop is OLED too and perhaps not a solid test. At that point I'd drag my Mini Tower out of my office. Maybe I should do that first?

Like I said before, the flickering must be sue to bad synchronization of the image, that is not exactly 60Hz or 50Hz. Installing proper Windows graphics drivers should eliminate flicker since the signal would be more accurate and possibly of better quality than standard VESA resolutions. Also see in Graphics Properties (Intel) or nVidia/AMD Control Panel for swapping between RGB and YCbCr (YUV). The former should give better colors but it also depends on the TV model.

Thanks Spap. So how do I determine/find proper Windows graphics drivers for my setup?

Regarding swapping, I'm using AMD as a chipset. Currently I have no AMD software to open and swap, unless you were referring to Device Manager?

UPDATE ON ISOLATING

So my disconnected the HDMI cable from the Beelink Mini PC and attached it to my wife's Asus Vivobook. Windows mirrored it perfectly and no flickering, no matter what I did. So correct me if I'm wrong but this confirms --

1. it's the Beelink somehow
2. and it's not a faulty HDMI cable

-- and I discovered something unexpected. My Beelink did not like streaming 4K. It would do it but freeze up here and there. 2K would be better but you still sensed something was strained. And it hates 1080p60, and 720p60 too.

My wife's laptop? No prob, Bob. Could this and the flickering be the same issue in two different guises?

Don't just try any driver. Go to Settings->System->Info to see the exact model of your AMD CPU, then go at www.amd.com and go at Support section, download and search for that model to find the appropriate drivers.

Thanks, but when I go to AMD and look for this -- AMD Ryzen 7 3750H with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx 2.30 GHz -- it instead wants me to download an app that 'takes care of this for me' and what I end up with is modern driver that the Beelink may not support. (Unless you can find something at that site I didn't see.)

To specifically address your concern I've contacted Beelink and asked them to name THE EXACT DRIVER I should be using for this model.

Don't download the app. If you look carefully you will see there is also a manual download option where you can find the driver yourself and download it.

Direct link: https://www.amd.com/en/support/apu/...rocessors-radeon-rx-vega-graphics/amd-ryzen-2

Okay, so as I started to try this I realized I had already tried this. AMD updates me to the latest driver but (as discussed above) it's better to use the driver that Beelink recommends. Unfortunately --

-- Beelink is only further driving me crazy. (It's China and so if you ask a question you have to wait a DAY to get an answer.) The answer was painfully confused --

1. I asked a very specific question: which driver should my exact model be running. (They asked for me to take a picture of my serial number of my Mini, which I thought wasn't necessary, but hey if it helps them and -- ) they never answered that question! Instead they said download these drivers and this PDF which will explain what to do. Unfortunately --

2. The PDF made absolutely no sense at a critical step. I'm sharing just for the eye-rolling pleasure here. LOOK at this --

2023-10-30 11_05_08-Driver installation tutorial(Suitable for all mini pc).pdf — Mozilla Firefox.jpg

The instruction was 'Find the device with the exclamation point on the right."

1. Do you see an exclamation?
2. My PC does not have an OTHER DEVICES folder
3. There are two identical 'unknown device' drivers listed but there's no explanation as to why they chose the 2nd one.

Sigh. (Hey, don't get me wrong. I don't mind if y'all in here offer advice that may or may not work. It's just a little infuriating when the OEM offers something so painful as this.)

SO I HAVE A RELATED QUESTION which was when the flickering started I had to reinstall Windows 'in place', the install that otherwise leaves me documents in such right where they are. Was this the mistake I made? Was I supposed to a factory reset instead, to force (?) the correct drivers back on it. Or does a factory reset need me to go to Beelink and reinstall the drivers anyhoo?

Expand and check Display Adapters. There should be an AMD entry. If you see Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, then you have generic graphics drivers (aka standard VGA adapter in older Windows versions). You need to install the graphics drivers from the link I gave you. This is not just any Andrenaline drivers, they are specific to your GPU.

By Jove I think I've found something. Someone is having a SER3 Beelink monitor flickering issue as well.

2023-10-30 16_19_57-Beelink Forum — Mozilla Firefox.jpg

There's a ginormous comment in this thread but something said in the middle of it make sense --

"Almost all of these intermittent 1 second black blank screens are related to the cable design or shielding problems that cause sync issues that require the device to pause and force a new handshake between computer and monitor."

That last part is exactly what is going on. It's keeps trying to reset itself during a 'handshake' that readily fails. Here's the thread --

If you can't see it, the longer version of that person's response goes like this --

"
Almost all of these intermittent 1 second black blank screens are related to the cable design or shielding problems that cause sync issues that require the device to pause and force a new handshake between computer and monitor. The higher the frequency and resolution the chance increases of this happening.

I have seen this a lot with onboard Radeon Vega graphics. I have a lot of HDMI cables and the problems with frequency changes or interference in the cable itself occurs often with marginal products above 1080p resolution. There are a lot of fake cables out there, too, boasting specs that are marginal compared to the actual cable rating they boast. Some copper HDMI cables that fail to meet the target specs of the manufacturer have added ferrite magnets placed near the HDMI connectors on both cable ends. Sometimes these are added after the cable is manufactured because it failed to meet the targeted manufacturing specifications.

Simply put, look to your cable as the problem and try others. Even Amazon has fakes of trusted name brands so it is a real problem finding the right cable. If you don't have a box of cables to try or if none of them solve the problem, I suggest you try this: order a high bandwidth cable that supports 8K at at least 60 Hz. Look at the reviews. 70%+ 5 star reviews is my threshold to try. Keep the packaging and send it back to Amazon if the problem continues after hooking up the new cable.

Then, order another cable and try it. Shorter is better for shielding issues. On your current cable you can try lowering the frequency to 50 Hz or lower and then lower resolution to see if and where the problem stops. Sometimes I have acheived a stable connection at the desired sync and resolution simply be lowering the color depth to 8 BPC. Currently, I'm running at 4K@60 Hz which is the SER3's max video output.

My current cable is very sensitive, despite its advertised high specs, and the blank screens reappear simply by moving the cable. Make sure that the cable doesn't come close to power lines, even DC power modules. Also, you can attempt to beef up your current shielding by wrapping your cable in extra tinfoil. The monitor/TV power supply can cause blank screens with some cable placements that are too close to the location of the power board at the back of the monitor/TV. I've pretty much eliminated drivers and Radeon software as the cause for the blank screen problem. With all my PCs with AMD onboard graphics, the problem you describe was always resolved by finding the right HDMI, DP or miniDP cable. It is very frustrating!"

Indeed it's frustrating. I'm nearly ready to rule out the drivers too. It FEELS hardware related.

So I have a desktop PC and a living room PC. Both have monitors. I simply switched the HDMI cables between them.

(I'm holding my breath. I'll be back to confirm if flicker free in the living. And/or if my desktop PC monitor starts flickering.

Did I miss it or is there a reason you don't say what Beelink you have. Knowing the specs does help. This is how I installed all of the missing drivers when I did a fresh install on one of my Beelink mini computers and Windows 11 didn't have the needed drivers. I went to the Beelink site and downloaded the drivers for my mini. I don't remember If I had to extract the download or not, it's been awhile. Then I went to Device Manager and for every unknown device I selected to update the driver and pointed it to the folder with the downloaded drivers and let Windows do its thing.

I did, earlier on. I now believe it's the HDMI cable failing. I've switched to a different cable and all is well. So far.

... and the flickering has returned. Which rules out faulty HDMI cables. Since flickering hasn't started on my desktop PC monitor.

So all indications are pointing at the Beelink itself. So the next tests include --

1. attaching the Beelink to a different monitor (easy enough)
2. attaching my office desktop PC to the LG TV

I think the covers the bases in isolating the origin of the problem. Meanwhile Beelink absolutely refuses to tell me what Display driver I should be using. I'm asking for the driver number and date but instead they simply say, "Install this package!" Which I believe I've already tried 4 times.

Hi Winuser,

I'm going to make a last ditch effort with updating drivers. This time I want to be observed by someone like you to catch me if I did something wrong. If anybody else wants to join in eyeballing me, I appreciate it.

1. I went to Beelink itself and they provided this link --

here is the driver for Ser3 Ryzen 7 3750: https://mega.nz/file/vjpElY4A#j4 ... 5hFCjlcSIsGQd6NDUfE

2. I get a .zip file that I've extracted and it offers me this --

I clicked the RADEON app and installed the driver only. It alerted me it was a downgrade to this --

2023-10-31 13_46_54-AMD SOFTWARE.jpg

3. Device Manager reads --

2023-10-31 14_13_48-AMD Radeon(TM) RX Vega 10 Graphics Properties.jpg

------------ SO --------------

Now what? Apart from testing for FLICKERING. Do I install the Chipset one too?

By the way I see no UNKNOWN DEVICES in DM
